Jabber Selects Simplewire to Create Wireless Instant Messaging Service
DETROIT, MI, February 26, 2001 - Jabber.com, Inc., a subsidiary of Webb Interactive Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: WEBB) announced a strategic partnership with Simplewire, a wireless text-messaging platform. The implementation of Simplewire?s text-messaging functionality has made Jabber the foundation for all wireless instant messaging services. Through Simplewire?s wireless text-messaging platform, Internet users will now be able to send and receive messages to and from Jabber to any wireless device, regardless of the carrier.
Until now, instant messaging has been largely tied to personal computers. The integration of Simplewire technology into the Jabber platform expands instant messaging to wireless devices such as two-way pagers and mobile phones supporting short message service (SMS).
"Only Jabber provided us with the flexibility we required when considering which instant messaging technology to integrate into our wireless messaging service," says John Lauer, CEO of Simplewire. "Our two platforms are extremely complimentary."
"Wireless messaging, device-to-device communication and application-to-application messaging are some of the largest growth sectors we see for instant messaging applications as we enter 2001," says Andre Durand, Founder of Jabber.com, Inc. "We're pleased to see Simplewire select Jabber as the foundation for their expanded service offerings and we're looking forward to a growing relationship in the wireless market."
Simplewire?s wireless text-messaging platform unifies all wireless networks and mobile devices into a consistent and simple interface. Simplewire either acts as a gateway between the mobile device and the Internet or between mobile devices residing on different networks. One key component offered with Simplewire?s technology is a wireless device?s presence. Presence information reports whether a mobile device is turned on, its geographic location, or its signal strength. Messages can be routed to various destinations, based on an individual?s presence within the Jabber platform. The integration of Simplewire?s technology allows messages to be directly sent to a user?s desktop or intelligently routed to a wireless device.
